During Men’s Health Awareness Week, 14th to 20th June, Talk Mental Health are running their 385challenge campaign, which encourages people to get together and tackle 385 of any physical activity such as; 385mins of exercise through the week, complete 385press ups, sit ups or pull ups, maybe cycle 385miles as a group around your region, swim 385lengths or lose 385oz of weight!? This is the ideal opportunity for people to socialise outside, get active and do something fun. Exercising is great for your physical and mental health, plus you can fundraise for your favourite charity or social enterprise, such as men’s support group Talk Mental Health. They have really struggled financially the past 15months, whilst continuing to support our communities, so let’s show our appreciation and support for their selfless acts during Covid.
Founder of Talk mental Health, the 385challenge and Army Veteran, Nick Wilson, will be undertaking a gruelling 385mile cycle ride from Margate to Lands End for his challenge. Whilst some may think this is fairly easy, what makes his challenge more complicated and so much more challenging, is Nick has seven pro-lapse discs of the neck and spine, resulting in his experiencing Chronic Pain daily. This is compounded by also having Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Arthritis in his hips and knees, plus Fibromyalgia, which heightens the sensitivity of all your nerve endings and can feel like having severe Arthritis in your joints, it also impacts your mind, resulting in “Fibro fog”, leading to confusion and short-term memory loss.
Suddenly the difficulty level increases somewhat!
“Right now, it honestly is a question of whether I can battle through the chronic levels of pain I will be in, whether my body will medically allow me to complete this and whether I am fit enough, physically and mentally, to see it through to the end!!” – Nick Wilson, Veteran.
